Scottish Agritourism Monitor Farm Project

The Client - Scottish Enterprise

The 18 month project highlighted the opportunities and challenges of managing complex tourism businesses while also running productive farming enterprises.  Go Rural were the facilitators and the project ran until Autumn 2015. Go Rural delivered 18 agritourism monitor farm meetings which they designed, delivered and facilitated, the creation and facilitation of an industry Management Group for each farm, support to the "Core 20" agritourism businesses and business development and facilitation to the wider monitor farm community groups. The project delivered knowledge exchange in a range of different formats including group discussions, intense workshops, one-off visits (e.g. from MSPs), website material and publications.

The Results

The final report acknowledged that Go Rural attracted some of the most proficient and award-winning Scottish rural tourism businesses to participate in the project and their skills and contacts brought high quality speakers and issues to the meetings.  There was also recognition in the report that Go Rural organised a format that clearly provided opportunities to learn, skilfully combined teaching, networking, and sharing  between participants.  The impact of the project on both farms included new products being developed and launched, staff becoming more independent, an increase in turnover for both businesses and specifically for Laggan Outdoor, a new management structure and plans for significant development of the business.

Go Rural facilitated the first Agri Tourism Monitor farm project, of which we were the chosen monitor farmer for the South of the country.  From the outset, Go Rural grasped the needs of our business and of the project and delivered 9 facilitated workshops ranging from Pricing strategy, to on-line marketing, Succession planning to project funding.  These workshops helped us grow our business significantly during the project thanks to the dedication, professionalism and expert knowledge of the Go Rural team.  Duncan McConchie, Laggan Outdoors

 Testimonials from final report

‘A fantastic programme with great facilitators!’

‘Brilliant. Don't want to gush too much but the whole projects success was down to the leadership, openness/honesty and organisation displayed by Caroline (and her team) - without whom I don't believe it would have happened. Thanks so much - count me in if it ever happens again or there is any follow up to this initiative.’

‘Very well run, informative and enjoyable. Thanks again.’

‘Excellent - well organised and energetic!’
